SARS AND THE CPA CONVENTION IN HAMILTON The CPA convention in Hamilton will go as planned based on the best public health information available. There have not been any reported cases of SARS in Hamilton. Public health officials in Toronto and Health Canada are clear that there is no danger of contacting SARS in Hamilton, in Toronto or at either of the Toronto airports (Pearson or Toronto Island). CPA will inform everyone immediately if the public health information changes. We will not endanger the health of our members. Public health officials indicate that SARS is well contained and on the wane. Officials of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta have repeatedly stated that Toronto is safe. In fact, they have stated on a number of occasions that Toronto has done an admirable job in fighting the infection. Their only caution is to avoid the hospitals if one can because of the stress of the added security and the remote chance of infection. The World Health Organization withdrew their travel advisory for Toronto on April 30, 2003. The advisory was issued on April 22, 2003 and was hotly contested by Ontario and Health Canada officials. The WHO based the advisory on the fact that several people with SARS left Toronto thereby exporting the disease. This occurred several weeks ago. Also, there was a misunderstanding about the Toronto SARS prevalence data. CDC officials publicly disagreed with the WHO travel advisory. At the same time, WHO officials have praised Toronto and Canada for quickly containing the disease. SARS AND OPAs MENTAL HEALTH TUNE UP The OPAs Mental Health Tune Up will be held as planned in downtown Toronto in the CBC Broadcast Centre on May 6 and 7, 2003. The event is co-sponsored by OPA and the Ontario branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association. SARS AND THE APA CONVENTION Those of you wondering about the impact of SARS on the APA convention in Toronto in August need to contact APA directly. From the information available to CPA, as mentioned above, there is no need to cancel plans to attend APA. Toronto is safe and the disease is well contained and on the wane. If conditions change, which is highly unlikely at this point, APA has indicated it will keep everyone apprised of the situation. CPA has contacted APA to offer assistance in monitoring the situation. SARS AND TORONTO: SPECIAL NOTES The NHL continued the hockey playoffs between Toronto and Philadelphia until the Leafs lost. Ottawa and Vancouver continue to play with no SARS implications. The Toronto Blue Jays continue to play at home in Toronto against American League baseball opponents from the U.S. While some conventions have cancelled in Toronto, others continue with no problems. An international SARS convention is opening in Toronto April 30, 2003. |
