mentorship program

We are currently collecting names and backgrounds of those interested in supervising students in either mental training/performance enhancement or in sport psychology.  As a psychology organization, we are especially looking for licensed practitioners (ie. psychologists), usually with 5 years experience who are able to supervise students on their licensing and/or practicum hours in the area of sport psychology.  Please email Tricia Orzeck: torzeck@interchange.ubc.ca if you are interested in supervising, along with your area(s) of expertise, location, contact info, cost (if any) to supervision, and level of student that you are able to supervise.

LINK to CANADIAN PROGRAMS & TRAINING GUIDELINES

Canadian Programs and Training guidelines to be completed soon.  The information provided here will serve as information for psychology students and practitioners who wish to practice in sport psychology, a regulated activity under the auspices of the Health Professions Act of various provinces across Canada.  Programs will also list various options for development as a researcher and teacher in sport psychology and differentiate between those programs that train individuals to become practitioners (ie. sport psychologists) and those majority of programs that only offer some basic knowledge. Here's an abstract from the 2006 Canadian Psychological Association Annual Conference that covered many of the issues surrounding the training of competent sport psychologists, including licensure as a psychologist while concurrently obtaining expertise in sport:

Training Guidelines Template

This Draft template includes the requirements for becoming a sport psychologist and/or competencies as a psychologist with expertise in sport and exercise psychology.  Generally, the first requirement is the requisite courses and internships relevant to psychology practice as outlined by each College in the province that one resides in, and in addition, the sport/exercise suggestive competencies.  The latter competencies are currently in revision to provide guidelines for students moving through current undergraduate or graduate programs and for current licensed practitioners wishing to practice in either sport or exercise psychology.  Please send your thoughts and input on these emerging guidelines to: Dr. Tricia Orzeck, torzeck@interchange.ubc.ca as we continue to revise them in collaboration with various psychological and sport related organizations, and individuals practicing in the field.
