We Are Family: How Everyday Choices Shape Our Kids' Experiences of Gender and Relationships — Interactive Parenting Workbook Evaluation

Description: What do dress-up boxes, compliments, and cartoons have in common? They all shape how kids learn what's "okay" for boys, girls, and everyone in between. This study evaluates a new interactive online workbook — We Are Family: How Everyday Choices Shape Our Kids' Experiences of Gender and Relationships — based on the book Beyond Sugar & Spice: A Parent's Workbook for Valuing Femininity in All Children. The workbook helps parents and caregivers explore how small, everyday parenting choices — from birthday gifts to bedtime stories — can shape children's beliefs about gender, relationships, and who gets to be accepted for who they are. The workbook teaches parents and caregivers about how the messages we send about masculinity, femininity, and gender shape children's development. We are seeking parents and caregivers to access and evaluate the workbook. Participation involves completing an online pre-survey (~20 min), navigating the interactive online workbook, and completing a post-survey (~30 min). Responses are completely anonymous. This study is conducted by Dr. Karen L. Blair and members of the Trent University Social Relations, Attitudes and Diversity (SRAD) Lab.

Specifics: Study Population:
Parents and caregivers of young children, aged 18 or older, residing in Canada or internationally. Open to all gender identities and family structures.
Participant Obligation:
Complete an online pre-survey (~20 min), navigate a free interactive online workbook, and complete a post-survey (~30 min). All responses are anonymous.

Testing Interventions for Borderline Personality Disorder

Description: Our research team is conducting an online study to examine the effects of a new couple therapy for couples where one partner is experiencing symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD) compared to individual psychotherapy for people with BPD symptoms and their partners. The study will provide either one of these psychotherapies to people with BPD symptoms and their partners for free, and participants will have the opportunity to complete study assessments that they will receive payment for in the form of gift cards. Our study is fully online (i.e., can be done from your home) and involves recruiting people across Ontario with symptoms of BPD, as well as their romantic partners.

Specifics: Study Population:
We are seeking both members of couples where: (a) one member of a couple has BPD or thinks they might (we will do assessments to confirm); (b) both members live in Ontario; and (c) both members are both above 18 years of age.
Participant Obligation:
Both members of the couple are able and willing to participate in a treatment for 14 weeks. Both members of the couple need to be willing to complete online interviews and questionnaires about emotions, thoughts, and behavior for up to 9 months.

HOW YOU SAY IT: EXPERIENCED PSYCHOTHERAPISTS’ UNDERSTANDINGS OF VOCAL QUALITY IN THE PSYCHOTHERAPY PROCESS

Description: The importance of psychotherapist vocal quality to the psychotherapy process is widely advocated by psychotherapy researchers and practitioners. However, it remains unclear which aspects of vocal quality are important and under which conditions they are important. My dissertation will explore experienced psychotherapists’ understandings of the role of vocal quality in the psychotherapy process. I will interview experienced psychotherapists about their understandings of psychotherapist vocal quality. The interview data will be subject to grounded theory analysis. The final product of this work will be a theory of psychotherapist understandings of psychotherapist vocal quality. This will focus and refine future research on psychotherapist vocal quality as well as inform the practice of psychotherapy.

Specifics: Study Population:
I am recruiting participants with a minimum 15 years of experience providing psychotherapy. Participants must be registered members of a healthcare profession, actively see at least one psychotherapy client per week, and be fluent in spoken English.

Participant Obligation:
Participants will participate in interviews lasting 60-90 minutes and complete a short questionnaire about demographics and professional experiences. They will be offered a $20 Amazon gift card and entry into a draw for a $100 Amazon gift card.

Location: Participation is completely virtual. To participate, please e-mail claire.hallett@mail.utoronto.ca.

Sexual Confidence Study

Description: This study is a randomized control trial that seeks to test the efficacy of a novel form of online psychotherapy to treat social anxiety in HIV-negative men who have sex with men. Participants who are eligible will receive 12 online psychotherapy sessions to better manage their social anxiety, substance use, and sexual HIV risk behaviour. We hypothesize that participants will experience reduced sexual risk behaviour, reductions in social anxiety symptoms, and will reduce substance use in sexual situations. Participants will complete a baseline assessment consisting of 1) an online questionnaire about mental health, substance use, and sexual health, 2) an online interview with a clinician about mental health and substance use, and 3) in-person HIV and STI testing with a research nurse. If you choose to participate in this study, you will be asked to attend in-person STI testing appointments up to 4 times throughout the study at our laboratory located at Toronto Metropolitan University. Participants may be eligible to receive up to $380 in compensation for their time. For more information and/or if you wish to participate, please contact us over email at sexual.confidence@torontomu.ca or call 416-979-5000 ext. 552179.

Specifics: Study Population:
We are recruiting HIV-negative men who are actively having sex with other men, are not currently using PrEP, and who experience anxiety in social situations.
Participant Obligation:
Participants will complete 4 assessments and 12 psychotherapy sessions via Zoom for Healthcare, and in-person STI testing at the baseline, post-intervention, 3- and 6-month follow ups.
Participants complete the study over the course of 10-12 months.
