ABOUT THE CONVENTION

The Canadian Psychological Association's motto is 'Advancing psychology for all'. What, if anything, does this mean for you and me? What, if anything, are its implications for the 2009 convention in Montreal?

Montreal is unique, and has been described as a "blending of brash New World urbanity with the romantic charm of European-flavoured historic districts and a Gallic sense of joie de vivre". Consistent with the CPA motto and the unique joie de vivre of Motnreal, the 2009 convention will offer a blend of both of Canada's official languages.

At least one invited address, by the esteemed Richard Y. Bourhis from the Université  du Québec à Montréal, will be delivered in French. In addition, the slides for CPA keynotes will be available in both official languages. Poster presenters are encouraged to display at least their abstracts in both official languages, and to further stimulate dialogue between French and English speakers, we will use stickers to identify and recognize poster presenters who are bilingual. I want that sticker, I am brushing up on my French.

In another innovation in blending at the 2009 convention, the program wil involve a combination of paper and digital media. The convention abstracts and an index to the abstracts will be posted online in advance of the convention, and all conference registrants will also receive them on a memory stick.

In addition to making the abstracts easier to search and to organize in advance of the convention, this method of publishing the abstracts reduces costs and saves our forests. Moreover, when you no longer have need of the abstracts, you will be a handy memory stick ahead of  a fuller recycling bin.

In addition to the abstracts on a memory stick, your convention bag will contain a paper booklet that includes the 'convention at a glance', that is, a detailed schedule of all sessions and events. The booklet will also contain a plan of the convention floor, essential maps of Montreal, and several blank pages for writing notes.
