PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE REPORTS
February 2009
1. Membership
The following members have agreed to continue on the committee:
John Hunsley, Editor, CP
Greg Irving, Editor, CJBS
Simon Grondin, Editor, CJEP
Christine Chambers, Member at Large
Wendy Josephson, Member at Large
Jo-Anne Lefevre, Member at Large
Hank Stam, Member at Large
Peter Graf, Member representing BBCS
2. Issues
A.) CJEP has changed its masthead to include the CSBBCS logo, this was accomplished with the assistance of Peter Graf, Simon Grondin, and APA and was done very smoothly.
B.) Progress continues with Canadian Psychological Association Press/Les Presses de la Societe Canadienne de Psychologie.
A sub-committee of the board has been struck to review proposals/expressions of interest. The sub-committee reviewed four submitted proposals and did not reach consensus that any should be discussed further at this time.
Discussion has continued with the sub-committee around an inaugural project that might be invited.

2. Issues
A.) We are now, for the most part, past the transition phase in CPA/APA publication changeover.
A CPA version of ethics code compliance (thanks to Carole Sinclair and the Ethics Committee) has now replaced the APA version of the form that was used on an interim basis.
APA has been quite responsive issues that have arisen (for example, a recent electronic issue around CSBBCS electronic access to CJEP)
B.) Progress continues with Canadian Psychological Association Press/Les Presses de la Societe Canadienne de Psychologie. Boilerplate contracts for authors are now available and the business name has been appropriately registered.
Submissions continue to arrive, and some discussion about decision making for projects needs to take place with the board, especially at this early stage.
Of greatest import to the Press, David Evans has decided to withdraw from inaugural “encyclopedia” project. On review, Dr. Evans decided the project as formulated would not have allowed him to meet his other commitments, including retirement. Some discussion about next steps with an inaugural project needs to occur.
C.) After seeking input from CSBBCS around nominations and selection, the publications committee recommended a new editor for CJEP. A motion for this decision has been put forward.
An announcement to solicit nominations for the new editor of CJBS is also forthcoming.

John Hunsley, Editor, CP, Greg Irving, Editor, CJBS, Simon Grondin, Editor, CJEP, Christine Chambers, Member at Large, Wendy Josephson, Member at Large, Jo-Anne Lefevre, Member at Large, Hank Stam, Member at Large
The committee also welcomes Peter Graf who is representing BBCS (see C. for details)
2. Issues
A.) The transition to APA publishing CPA journals continues. Special thanks to Wendy Josephson for her work on a column that was to be published in the journals and Psynopsis informing readers of the change and the benefits thereof. Also, tremendous thanks to the Editors and the Acting Executive Director for their attentiveness to implementation issues during this transition.
The head of the publications committee and the Acting Executive Director travelled to APA on February 14th, 2008 for updates and further discussion about the transition and implementation of the agreement. The meetings included over 20 staff at APA headquarters ranging from Gary VandenBos, the APA publisher, to Senior Directors of Marketing and Operations, and all of the individuals involved in the production, marketing, and electronic processes related to CPA journals.
Highlights from issues related to Marketing, Copyediting and Translation, Accounting, and Internet Access included:
By joining with PsycArticles, the CPA journals have already increased institutional penetration by 76% within Canada (from 79 institutions to 130). There is potential to have a 900% increase in worldwide institutional reach through PsycArticles, and CPA journals will be exposed to audiences in Australia, New Zealand and Europe where the journals have not had much exposure to date.
APA marketing is also targeting French speaking regions (France, Belgium, and Switzerland) because of French content in our journals.
Operational issues including translation, copyediting, and production time-lines were discussed and addressed as these have arisen in the publication of the CJBS (the journal published earliest in 2008 and therefore the first publication since the transition to APA publication).
Accounting practices (collection of GST, invoicing, statements) were discussed and CPA’s operational preferences accommodated. In this regard, note that CPA subscriber lists and information will be communicated to CADMUS (APA’s printer) for the purposes of postal mailing of journals but will not be imported into APA databases.
There was a “live” demonstration of the revised internet portal through the CPA website which will offer enhanced search features for our three journals, as well as maintaining CPA branding.
B.) Progress has been made around the CPA press. In consultation with our lawyer, contract templates have been developed between authors and the press. At the time this report was written, the name Canadian Psychological Association Press/Les Presses de la Societe Canadienne de Psychologie was being registered in Ontario. Finally, registration of the CPA trademark is also underway so that this trademark can be used on the spine of books. All these discussions are intended to ensure that intellectual property and copyright issues are dealt with. There has also been some preliminary contact with potential authors.
C.) The agreement with BBCS and CPA continues to be implemented. As per that agreement, BBCS members will receive electronic access to CJEP. Also, that agreement stipulates that a member of BBCS serve on the publications committee. After discussions with the president of BBCS (Dr. Dough Mewhort), we can report that Dr. Peter Graf has agreed to sit on the publications committee effective immediately.
D.) An announcement concerning the editorship of CJEP was disseminated after discussions with BBCS.

2. Issues
A.) The committee has continued to discuss the formation of the Canadian Psychological Association Press/Les Presses de la Société Canadienne de Psychologie. A draft author submission form has been created (attached).
Such a form is the usual first contact between a publishing house and potential authors. Examples of such forms are widely available, and were sampled from a broad range of publishers from the small and technical (e.g. university press) to the more commercial, high volume publishers. Members of the publication committee were asked for feedback to an initial draft, and suggestions from the committee are included in the present draft.
Discussion of Press and this form also led to the following questions to be discussed as the Board sees fit:
Would Canadian Psychological Association Press/Les Presses de la Société Canadienne de Psychologie consider self-help materials (understood to be rooted in evidence based treatments) or college/university textbooks?
To what extent should both the authors and target audience be defined as “Canadian” and how would this impact on the nature and quality of submissions received?
Would the emphasis on “Canadian” lead authors to avoid the Press because their work is not identifiably or uniquely Canadian? Relatedly, is the target audience of such books only Canadian?
B.) In October CSBBCS membership voted to increase dues and make an electronic subscription to CJEP part of every member's right. Planning is occurring to provide the membership list of CSBBCS to CPA and APA so that this change will be implemented rapidly.
Also related to the agreement between CSBBCS and CPA, attached is the newly revised masthead for CJEP which the committee enthusiastically endorsed by both the committee and CSBBCS.
C.) The transition to APA publishing CPA journals continues. The final contract was signed at meeting at CPA offices on July 20th. A conference call between the APA journals office, the three editors, and chair of the publications committee took place August 20th to discuss implementation of the agreement, timelines, and workflow (see attached).
There has also been discussion of various necessary forms including Assignment of Copyright, Permissions Alert, and Full Disclosure of Interests. Suggestions for these forms were advanced by the journal editors and chair of the publications committee.
One outstanding issue concerns a form that would affirm the authors’ compliance with ethical standards. Presently, authors for APA journals sign a form that is based on the APA ethical code. The publications committee recommends that a parallel form using the CPA code be constructed and the publications committee has requested the input of the CPA ethics committee, through Carole Sinclair, to collaborate on the construction of this form.

PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE REPORT
February 2007
The new Editors of Canadian Psychology (CP) and the Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science (CJBS) have both had the first journal issues of their editorial terms sent out. Both first issues came out on time.
John Hunsley, the new Editor of CP, has organized a special section in the second issue of the journal on applications of psychological research to public policy in Canada. It will include articles from Steve Lindsay, Roger Dixon, Philippe Landreville, and Wendy Craig. There will also be a special issue of CP in 2008 devoted to the domain of literacy development in Canada, with Alain Desrochers and Sonya Symons serving as action editors. Adam Radomsky, the Book Review Editor, is planning to include 7 or 8 reviews in each issue this year.
In response to a call for reviewers from the Sections, Greg Irving, the new Editor of CJBS, received more than 70 responses. Most volunteers were from the Student Section, so this has been more of an investment in future reviewers than an outright solution to the problem Greg was facing of too few willing reviewers in some areas of expertise. Greg reports that the pool of reviewers is growing through this and other efforts on his part, which is reducing the turnaround time for manuscripts. He has identified further building of the pool of manuscript reviewers as one of his goals for his editorial term. received more than 70 responses. Greg reports that the pool of reviewers is growing through this and other efforts on his part, which is reducing the turnaround time for manuscripts. He has identified further building of the pool of manuscript reviewers as one of his goals for his editorial term. There is a special issue of CJBS planned on Organizational Psychology Research in the New Millennium, with guest co-editors Gary Latham and Marie-Helene Budworth. The deadline for submissions for that issue is September 1, 2007.
Simon Grondin, Editor of the Canadian Journal of Experimental Psychology, has a special issue on Touch underway, which is expected to be ready for September. Simon and I have been working with Carolyn Harley, President of the Canadian Society for Brain, Behaviour and Cognitive Science (CSBBCS), on the details of a proposal for CPA to collaborate more fully and formally in the publication of CJEP. The Publications Committee has reviewed the proposal, and I’ll be bringing a motion to the February Board meeting for the Directors’ consideration.
Negotiations have progressed to the point of a revised contract proposal from APA. The Publications Committee has also been reviewing this proposal. A copy is in Board members’ binders, and a more detailed report will be provided at the February Board meeting. My thanks to John Service and Dan Berman for all their hard work on this.
Ian Nicholson, the Director responsible for Professional Affairs, has approached me to discuss the possibility of having CPA add a practitioners’ journal to its publication offerings. I put him in contact with Will Schweitzer from APA, who was generally very enthusiastic about talking to him about the next steps to take in developing this idea.
Respectfully Submitted,
